Sound Paintings

Standing Paintings are made in collaboration with astrophysicist Jo Verwohlt. It was part of our exhibition Interference in Nikolaj Kunsthal February-May 2023.

Sound Paintings are three “paintings” made with sound frequencies and silicates (stone, sand, glas) in different colors. The piece is rooted in the discoveries by composer and physicists Ernest Cladhnis, who unveiled the transformation of sound waves into visual patterns by vibrating metal plates adorned with sand using a violin bow. We wanted to showcase how a sinus wave would change visually when the frequency of the sinus wave changes.  Therefore we used transparent polycarbonate so the viewer could experience the evolution of the sound wave. The red silicates ensembles the lower frequencies, the green silicates the middle range and the blue silicates the highest frequencies - a theme in color and frequency that was consistent in the exhibition.
